Welcome to William H. Kelso elementary school, home of the Cheetahs! My name is Irene Green and I am the new, proud principal of Kelso. I have served Inglewood communities in various capacities for the last 22 years. I am committed to the students, staff, families and community of the Inglewood Unified School District.
Our veteran staff is dedicated to fulling the goals of our mission: ensuring all students develop strong academic achievement through an enriched, diverse and challenging curriculum, which utilizes the latest technology in a safe, supportive environment that nurtures positive cultural and social values. “College and Career Readiness Begins at Kelso!”
We believe in a whole-child approach to teaching and learning. The school’s award-winning Positive Behavior & Supports (PBIS) initiative is highlighted by Kelso’s PRIDE core values: Positive attitude + Respect + Integrity + Diligence = Excellence.
Kelso has a longstanding reputation for excellence and student achievement. The school was awarded a Title 1 Academic Achievement Award in 2007 and was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2005 and 2012. In 2017, Kelso received the Bronze Award from the California PBIS Coalition for its school-wide PBIS initiative, and in 2018 Kelso earned national recognition as an Imagine Nation school. My intention is to continue to build on these recognitions and excel our school to greater heights.
I am excited about the new and exciting programs being offered at Kelso with a focus on STEAM- Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. All students TK-6th receive high level music instruction through Education Through Music Los Angeles. Students perform a variety of musicals throughout the year with a winter musical, Black History Month program, and a spring musical for International Day. We further enrich our students in Science through our partnership with the Engineering Factory. Students in grades 3rd – 6th receive personalized science instruction that leads to the completion of a science based project. At the school level, students are taught to be leaders in their school and the community, through student council, offered in grades 5 and 6.
Kelso’s devoted staff leads our school through “Our School Principle”- At every point along their educational journey, each student will be provided personalized opportunities and equitable resources for consistent academic and social-emotional growth, steady progress towards high school completion, and readiness for post-secondary experiences of their choosing.
Kelso puts the child first!
